almost can't contain my excitement!

tomorrow is the start of the annual Songkran festival or better known as the Thai New Year festival. every year, my family and i take a little trip to the Thai temple in Silver Spring (Wat Thai DC) to make offerings, pray, and eat...a lot.

this is my favorite Thai holiday, ever! around this year in Thailand, people are having the BIGGEST water fights throughout the country. when i was little, i remember going around with big ol' tubs of water on the back of a pick-up truck and splashing every car and pedestrian in our path. i'm not sure if people still use this method, cause of draughts and stuff, but i do know that it happens every year. if you don't have plans tomorrow, maybe you should stop by. but make sure to come a little early though cause traffic will be bad and parking will be sparse. (it seems like every Thai person around this area come out of hiding and congregate here once a year, it's insane!) i can't wait! i'll be sure to take lots of pictures and post em ASAP! in the mean time, here are some from last year...

traditional mask, i think this is supposed to be a giant's face

i actually went to school here for a summer (thai school: i picked up where i
l
eft off in Thailand and learned things that a forth grader there would)

people put gold leaves on Buddhas

girls dressed in traditional sarongs and tops splashing water on guests

a praying woman putting a gold leaf on a buddha

yummy dessert!
ps - if you do decide to come, bring an umbrella...it's been raining on the day of the festival for the past three years! lets cross our fingers, shall we?
